About Minicoders

> Hello World!

This is our Story,

Minicoders began with a simple idea and very limited resources.
Growing up in Peru, I witnessed firsthand how access to education, especially in technology, was not equally distributed. In many of the rural communities near my hometown, children had never used a computer before. The idea of creating a game, writing code, or interacting with technology felt distant and inaccessible.

At 17, I decided to change that in the only way I could.
With just a few tablets and no funding, I began teaching small groups of children the basics of coding using platforms like Scratch. What started as a single workshop quickly became something more. The excitement in the classroom was immediate, kids who had never touched a computer were building their own games, experimenting, asking questions, and most importantly, believing they were capable.

Minicoders was built from those moments.
It continues to grow through the belief that even the smallest initiative can create meaningful change.

Minicoders exists to close the gap.

Why This Matters

In many communities around the world, children grow up without access to basic technological resources.
While the world becomes increasingly digital, entire populations are left behind.

The Mission:

Our mission is to introduce young students to the world of coding through hands-on, creative, and engaging workshops that build confidence, curiosity, and problem-solving skills.

Minicoders is a student-led initiative dedicated to bringing computer science education to children in underserved and rural communities. We believe that access to technology and digital literacy should not be a privilege, it should be a right.

The Vision:

Minicoders is still growing, but its purpose remains the same: to expand access to technology education and reach more children, one classroom at a time.

We envision a future where every child (regardless of where they are born) has the opportunity to explore technology, create with it, and see themselves as part of the future of innovation. Because when a child realizes they can create something from nothing, it changes how they see themselves, and what they believe is possible.

Note

‎‎> Hey, I’m Sarah!

I’m an 18-year-old student, aspiring statistics major, and the founder of Minicoders. My long-term goal is to use research and data to better understand and address educational inequality. I’m especially interested in how access, environment, and early learning experiences shape a child’s opportunities, and how we can design systems that close those gaps.

Alongside building Minicoders, I’ve worked as a Research Assistant at Stanford’s SPARK Lab, contributing to the MAGIC Project, a research initiative focused on measuring children’s curiosity, creativity, and problem-solving skills in early learning environments. This experience deepened my understanding of how critical early exposure to learning tools and environments is in shaping long-term development.

I’ve also worked as a coding instructor for CodeFu Academy in the Bay Area, where I teach elementary school students the fundamentals of programming. Teaching in both the U.S. and Peru has given me a unique perspective on the disparities in access to STEM education, and reinforced why this work matters.

Minicoders exists at the intersection of all of these experiences. It started with a few tablets and small workshops in Peru, but it represents something much bigger: a commitment to using both education and research to create more equitable opportunities for the next generation.
